The Old Stone House and Other Stories edition by Anna Katharine Green Reference eBooks

This book was a pleasant surprise! It was written for children and might still appeal to some gentler ones, even in this technological age. The story concerns a family of five young cousins being raised by their aunt Faith, after the deaths of their various parents. The house in the title refers to the home their warm and loving aunt has provided for them. The descriptions of late 19th century family life and the setting on the Western Great Lakes are delightful. There is humor, sadness and joy woven into their lives, just like the family in Louisa May Alcott's " Little Women" This book reminded me a great deal of that.
The writer seems able to capture both the angst of growing into young adulthood and the joys of being a little boy or girl and playing freely. Even the three dogs owned by the family have definitive characters! I really enjoyed and chuckled over the wonderful description of a Fourth of July play put on by the younger members of the family, plus dogs and sundry cows!
Because of the strongly Christian themes, this book might not appeal to all readers, but it is done in a very natural way. Aunt Faith, well named, is very anxious about the spiritual health of her charges and has several conversations with them about their beliefs.
There is also an unexpected and untimely death in the story but it is very well handled and should not upset a child. I hope I will be able to read this lovely book to my grandchild when she is old enough.
The writing is very clean and flows well, unlike some more turgid books of the period. I know that Henry James admired his friend's writing. I wonder what he would have had to say about this sweet and unworldly tale?
I am happy to recommend it.

The Old Stone House and Other Stories edition by Anna Katharine Green Reference eBooks Reviews

Pleasant book to read. I enjoyed how Faith worries about the same problems I face today.
Thank you. Thank you
I confess I did not read past the first story in this anthology. What promised to be an interesting historical novel turned into a tale of increasing horror as the themes of jealousy and murder emerged toward the end of "The Old Stone House." The author's craft was quite appealing, and there was never a hint of lewdness, but nothing could make up for the all-too-vivid portrait of the destruction and despair brought about by human hearts blackened with unholy passions. I gave this book one star because that is the lowest rating available.
The first part of the book (over 50%) is a really good classic mystery. I would have given it a five star rating. The last part of the book were very short story mysteries which were more thought-provoking than classic mystery. Overall I enjoyed the book, especially because it was free.
As another reviewer has stated, The Old Stone House takes up more than half the book while the other stories are quite short. That story rates 5 stars, in my opinion, and the other stories collectively about a 3. They read so quickly, though, both separately and as a whole, that the impression of the book after it's over is largely of that first story. These are not detective stories - their appeal comes from their atmosphere. Not Anna Katharine Green as we generally think of her, but a good read nonetheless. Very much recommended.
