The author weaves a thread from his grandfather's spartan factual daily entries in a diary for approximately fifty years through his Mother's letters to him and family members and then his own experiences, bringing them altogether in a compelling manner. While the story line is personal, the reader gets to "know" the three main characters in the end and at the same time, there are universal lessons and emotions to experience in one's own life. An engaging, slice-of-life book by a multifaceted author not afraid to explore the depth of his grief and other emotions driving him. Letters and journal entries are woven together with text to construct a meaningful piece.
This was a heartwarming and beautifully written memoir. The author shares his history and journey through grief by connecting the daily journals of his farmer grandfather, letters from his mother, and his own reflections, memories and insights on life and relationships. I highly reccomend this moving and uplifting book.
I loved how the author seamlessly interwove the history of his family, through letters and diaries from his mother and grandfather, with his own life story. So moving to see how the past influences the present in ways that are both expected and surprising. As someone who is also fascinated by family history, this book makes me want to look at old letters I have in a whole new way. This was an inspiring, interesting story. Highly recommend!
Mark Johnson knows how to take ordinary everyday happenings and make one appreciate their importance. I have recently lost my sister to cancer. This book is helping me come to terms with my grief. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to cope with grief.
This is a heart-felt story about a man dealing with his grief over his mother's death and finding solace in going back to his roots. The author incorporates many of his mother's letters to him and many entries from his grandfather's journal. The caring nature of his relationship with his mother really came through for me; through her letters I got a strong picture of her as a smart, caring woman and mother.
